About the film
UNFREEDOM is an urgent contemporary thriller about a society torn apart by political, religious and sexual turmoil. Shifting between New York and New Delhi, it sets two unflinching stories about religious fundamentalism and intolerance side by side: a Muslim terrorist attempting to silence a liberal Muslim scholar, and a young woman who defies her devout father and escapes an arranged marriage because she is secretly in a taboo lesbian romance. In this searing portrait of a polarised world, all four characters go to their absolute limit, and beyond, to defend their deeply held and conflicting views on freedom, faith, family and love. Banned in India. Released in North America and worldwide on Netflix.
The idea behind UNFREEDOM came from the desire to express the lack of freedom in the socio-economic structure of our times. Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem "Ye daagh daagh ujaala" inspired it. With its roots in a society built on capitalism, patriarchy and their ties to religion and violence, I chose the identities of Muslims and homosexuals in two distinct geographies. In a world where mass extermination and discrimination happen in the name of identity, UNFREEDOM shows that people said to belong to one identity are each unique in how they face the most pressing issues of their lives. The film follows different individuals against violent prejudice, each seeking their own road to what they believe could set them free.
